Unfinished Business

This is an old photo from a trip to Perth Zoo years ago. I discovered it going through one of my old sites and thought it deserved another airing. Anyway, onto the unfinished business.

Last year I'd planned on buying a cd every fortnight, working from A to Z over the course of the year.

For most part, I managed it. I'm still missing albums by bands/artists with names beginning with Q (I'd intended to get a Queen CD but could never choose), Y and Z (had been contemplating Zero7).

Any suggestions?

Back in action

My stereo's back! Yay! Happiness is having non-headphoned music back again.

Speaking of music, last week I kind-of-officially cheated in the A-Z music 'challenge' which is still kicking along every fortnight or so. Technically I'm meant to be buying a CD from an artist I don't already own each fortnight, but I caved last week and bought U2's Achtung Baby for U because, well, how could I not? It's Achtung Baby.

Anyway, it's covered in beautiful Anton Corbjin photos. How could I refuse

The Year of Music Continues

2004: A Year of Music continues, despite a complete lack of coverage here. Last week saw something of a binge:

  • I couldn't find Marvin Gaye's What's Going On? so I settled for Midnight Love rather than an el-cheapo looking Best Of
  • H was a bonus round: Aussie duo Hamish's Homesick and Ben Harper's Welcome to the Cruel World
  • I got into the swing of things and picked up the self-titled debut from The Dissociatives (Silverchair's Daniel Johns and dance producer Paul Mac) and the John Butler Trio's latest, Sunrise Over Sea, after seeing their amazing performance at the Blues & Roots festival the other weekend.
  • I've also inadvertently acquired George's latest album, Unity and the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy soundtrack to my collection, courtesy of some competitions on the web.

Next week I'm up for artists beginning with i. It's been great reading everyone's suggestions in the past, so roll on with tips for i.

Gee

It's time for G in the A-Z of CDs... I'm thinking Gelbison, I've got no idea what they're like but they're Aussie and they were at SXSW. Depending on how I feel on the weekend this may be a double-purchase round (in the fine tradition of B is for bonus! and F is for freebie!).

I'm open to suggestions -- what's a good artist beginning with G?

Stone

I haven't been posting about it lately (I've been meaning to write up a short entry about each cd so far) I'm still chugging along with with the A-Z of cds.

I've had a lazy month and never got around to E either, so this week I walked away with Epicure's The Good Girl and I splashed out on double the quota for F: The Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (because I've never gotten into The Flaming Lips) and From the Cold by Perth band Fourth Floor Collapse (because Sun is a cool song, and hey, they're from Perth!).

The sad news on the A-Z is that while the jazz band K are recording a live cd next Friday (I'm already booked in for a party elsewhere that night) it might not be out in time for K -- late May from memory. Consider this advance notice that I may have to cheat and swap a few letters to make that one possible. Because you've gotta give bonus points for getting a band whose name is made up entirely of the letter.

Anyway, that whole j-k-l bit of the alphabet was always a bit hazy.

And so it begins

Technically, that big CD-a-fortnight thing started two weeks ago. I just haven't quite got around to it yet. So this weekend I'm going looking for two CDs: one from an artist beginning with A, and one with B. I'll probably just head into JB and start flicking through the racks to see what grabs me, but I thought I'd throw the floor open for suggestions here as well.

Any takers?

a year of music

Sometime just before New Year's I remember having a chat with Dave and the gang, when we noticed that for most of us there's pretty much 26 pay periods to a year and 26 letters to the alphabet. So began the concept of the Alphabetical-new-CD-a-fortnight challenge.
