bennets lane

I finally made it out to the jazz club at Bennets Lane last night, which was a-mazing. It's hidden away at the end of a lane at the end of another lane, so when you make it down there it's a bit of a discovery.

And the cool thing about it was that while every Jazz gig I've seen in Perth (total of less than 3 I think, it's pathetic) it's always such a rare thing that the venue's packed. Bennets had about 12 people when I showed up. When the band started they asked everybody to make more noise since there were so few of us. More people did rock up (and block my view. pfft) but it was still an amazing night. Recommended.

it had to end someday
I should also point out that my string of too-good-to-be-true luck with Melbourne weather has pretty much ended. Today was cloudy and windy, a change from the clear and warm that I've somehow scored the past few days. It's not rain and hail, but there's still a few days left for that. Touch wood.

the to-do list
So I figure I'm about half-way through my trip (well, actually a bit past half, but hey) and it's going great. It's been amazing to see somewhere new, get a new perspective, meet people I haven't seen in ages or have never met. And not that I really had much of a to-do list before I came, it's about time to make sure I don't miss anything big.

I want to go check out Brunswick Street, and I'd like to track down the Crumpler store (I was one in Fitzroy, but they didn't have much) and grab a t-shirt and maybe a mobile phone thingy. Uhm, I'm struggling to think of anything else actually. If the weather's good, I'll go see all the markets and drop into the Arts Centre Markets and see if they've still got the black and white prints that I saw last weekend, but didn't get a chance to go back and buy (nyaw!). And if I see any funky shirts that aren't crazy expensive I might just grab them.

more fun with trams

Today was really just a lazy public transport day. Which is the ultimate, since I've got a week-long metcard, which gets me anywhere within the city on trams, trains and buses. Mmmm.

And the trams are just too easy to catch. So I've started just catching them, and not really checking where they go, as long as they end up where I need to be. So last night when I caught a tram to St Kilda Beach, I ended up getting a meandering tour of the back streets between the CBD and St Kilda. Very weird.

But whatever public transport is around, somehow I always end up walking for a while anyway. I can catch a tram to pretty much anywhere from Flinders or Swanson Streets, but I usually walk the extra few blocks into Bourke (which is the shopping mall) and catch a tram from there. Which probably explains the aches and pains. I'm thinking of taking it a bit easier on the feet the next few days, but we'll see how well that works out.

The other weird thing about catching trams is that you usually end up in the middle of a road. The even weirder part is that in terms of turning vehicles at traffic lights, pedestrians have right of way. I've been told this is actually law Australia-wide, but I've never seen it in Perth. Any ideas?

Oh, and hook turns. Enough said.

Something about trams and stations makes for great black and white photo subject matter. No idea why. And I should probably mention that when I get back to Perth, I'll be putting up high-res versions of all the pics so you don't have to squint to see stuff if you want a closer look.
