finally
Late at night I finally caught up with Daniel, who I've known by email and chat for we figured about 5 or 6 years, maybe more. It was really pretty weird to talk to someone who you know so well, but have never really spoken to. The only thing missing is the knowledge of all the little conversational things you get to know from years of friendship. It was great fun, and there's the most amazing view of the skyline from a park near his place. I'm hoping to catch up again in the next few days and have a good chat.

pointlessly cool

Two firsts for today: I finally made it down to St Kilda today, and I had my first trip on a tram (oooooh).

The thing I love about Melbourne is how cool and arty everything is. Everywhere you look there's funky little public art, from the pedestrian bridges to little scultures. It's kinda like East Perth, but on a much bigger scale.

It's strange actually, Melbourne feels kinda like home. Maybe it's because of everything I've heard about Melbourne from the guys I've been sharing a house with, but it doesn't feel as foreign here as I've found other places I've travelled to. And with a city/CBD that's planned out as well as Melbourne is, it's a great place to travel around. It's all very pedestrian-friendly (at least in good weather) and the trams/trains are a great way to get around. I love it here already.

The colours coming out here as the city heads into winter are beautiful. Oranges, reds, greens are all out; the reflections in the buildings against the blue skies looks great, and I want to take more photos while I'm here. From what I've seen on tv, the good weather should keep going till about Friday, so I'm going to make the most while I can.

icy cold
One bummer about coming to Melbourne from Perth is that, well, I don't have a coat. Actually that's not exactly true. I've got a polar fleece jacket that I didn't bring since it's not much good against wind, and it's hopeless when it's wet (and I thought, hey, it's Melbourne, it'll be wet — whoops). I've also got another big jacket but it was a bit big when I bought it, and since then I've lost weight so it's even bigger.

So now I need to buy a coat. I've been looking around at Just Jeans and Myers in the city, but nothing's grabbed me, or the price hasn't been right. Later this week I'm hoping to head out and check out some of the warehouses in Fitzroy or Richmond to grab something a bit cheaper, especially since a coat is only handy in Perth for about two days a year. More news on that later. But I definitely need one, it's freezing out there at night.
