Things to do list (revisited)

It's been on my to-do list for years now, since at least October 2001 apparently (I knew keeping my archives was a good idea!).

Learn to play the guitar.

When she and Matt left the country a little over a year ago, April left her beautiful black acoustic guitar in my care and it's been sitting at arm's reach for all that time, reminding me of my threats to learn to play music.

Late last night I got home from dinner out in Subi and, in all the wisdom that can be mustered at a quarter-to-twelve at night, decided to start learning the guitar. There and then.

I grabbed some learn to play guitar videos off the web and ran through the introductory lessons ("okay folks, this is a fret!") before crashing for the night.

We'll see how it goes.

I've had the pleasure of knowing a great bunch of musician-type friends over the last few years (the photo's of Luke at a party on the beach in Mandurah years ago) so if I can make something even half-musical sounding out of a piece of hollow wood and some strings I'll be a very happy man.

So, I'm now in the process of striking one thing off my to-do list. What's on your list? (And tell me about your musical gifts!)

I had a short lived career playing the trumpet that I borrowed off my grandad during my primary school years. Strangely, today I recieved that same trumpet again. Perhaps I should begin playing once more, much to the disgust of various housemates and neighbours.

I love to do lists!

I tried to learn guitar more than a decade ago – and was told by the sort-of professional guitarist and guitar teacher of amateurs (later to become my brother in law) that I could not because my fingers did not have the full reach.

My partner – blast him – is very musically talented and an amazing auto-didact. He taught himself how to play guitar to win over the girls back when he was just a wee lad and can also play piano beautifully. I hate him. (when I’m not otherwise occupied loving him). In our house are two acoustic guitars, one electric guitar – with amp – and one upright piano. People are always asking me if I play and I have to tell them how musically not talented I am. Oh, such a story of woe!

The things I can do and are on my to do list are:- (re)learn Vietnamese (my mother tongue); (re)learn Latin (the tongue of my honours studies); learn Esperanto (just because); learn to take excellent photographs; and generally, become a polymath. One of these days …

When I was studying I started learning to play the guitar with a flat mate. Although I bought the guitar in a professional music shop, I had the same problem as OTT, I couldn´t reach the "f". I gave up - they really should have sold me a guitar for juveniles!

When I was a kid I learned to play the piano (on an original Steinweg - now those pianos are called Steinway and Mr. Steinweg had long left my hometown and went to America.)
I lost interest at the age of fourteen, but even though I can´t read notes anymore, my hands still remember some tunes... amazing, it´s my hands only.

I'm a guitar beginner as well. I'm sure you'll love learning all your favourite songs: it's kept me going for a year now. I guess that means I'm not much of a beginner anymore!
P.S. Your photography is amazing. Keep it up.
