Music to wake up to

A couple of months back I worked out how to set the timers on my stereo so that it's acting as an alarm clock. Turns out it's easy to set up so that the alarm kicks in at the same time for Monday-Thursday and later on Fridays, since I get to sleep in then.

Long story short, I now get woken up each weekday by the first track of whatever CD I've got in there. This morning it was Thievery Corporation's The Cosmic Game (the first track is 'Chasing the Hate Machines') and The Hampden's Even World ('The Hype') is becoming something of a regular Friday thing. Lately I've also been partial to the Garden State soundtrack (Coldplay's 'Don't Panic'), The Kings of Convenience's Riot On An Empty Street ('Homesick') and of course Morcheeba's Big Calm (The Sea).

After a couple of months I think I've worked my way through most of the first tracks that are nice and mellow enough to wake up to. There's a heap of CDs with good tracks later on but that start out a bit too rowdy for 6am...

Got any suggestions of good first tracks? Leave a comment and let me know!

I'm a bit partial to zooropa. It eases you in all dreamy like and keeps building up. A nice way to start the day.

Given that I generally require an abrupt wake up (I'm one of those people that has their alarm on buzzer), I'd recommend waking up to > by Fourth Floor Collapse.

However since you're after mellow have a look at:
The Freshmen Single by The Verve Pipe - oddly enough it opens with The Freshmen.
And you can't go past Messers Matthews and Reynolds Live at Luther College. Either CD is suitably qualified with One Sweet World on disc 1 and Typical Situation on disc 2

The soundtrack from a japanese anime Voices from a Distant Star is quite cool.

REM's Daysleeper strikes me as a good wake-up tune. Reminds me of a freezing '98 English winter when the single was being played a lot on Radio 1, and it woke me up nearly every morning.

Talking of freezing, the Perth forecast is even colder than Melbourne.

Nice mentioning of Fourth Floor there too, mot.

Um, Tori Amos' Spark from Choirgirl.

I can suggest not Smells like Teen Spirit. I did this once. Bad Mistake. I think John Coltranes Love Supreme form the album of the same could be good. And yes you should go and buy it if you don't have it.

what about Nick Drake's Pink Moon, the titletrack is no 1...the only problem is that you may want to stay in bed listening to nick drake's voice rather than get up...

also, as a patriotic norwegian it's quite cool to see kings of convenience waking up ppl on the other side of the world =) a beautiful album you've got there, mate

-José Gonzales? He would be lovely to wake up to.
-Arcade Fire (Funeral)
-Cat Power (The Greatest)
-Ed Harcourt (Here be Monsters)
-Iron & Wine (Our Endless Numbered Days)
-M Ward (Duet for Guitars), (Transfiguration of Vincent)
-Mojave 3 (Excuses for Travellers)

Any stipulation on length of song? What are you waking up to this winter?

I have Robert Miles - Children (Dream Version) at the moment that wakes me up, followed by Silence by Delerium, and then a few more songs and they start getting more pacier.

Quite nice

Ryan Shupe & The Rubberband - Dream Big (might now be the first song, but you can buy a cd alarm clock and burn it to a cd like I did). I have had it for over a year straight, but I am thinking of change it to jim brinkman - the promise (simple things album).

The Chain by Fleetwood Mac is my wakeup tune at the moment, it has a nice gentle build up so you always wake up at a different point in the song, plus the payoff in the last minute of the song means you wont be lazing around in bed all day.

I'm surprised that no-one mentioned "Wake up Boo" by the Boo Bradley's yet. It's quite good to wake up to, I can assure you.

Try "Freaky Styley" (original long version) by Red Hot Chili Peppers.
