Hot Chocolate: Part 1

Today I finally made it down to L'Aperitivo, just down the road from where I'm staying in Brighton, for the first serious entry in mission: hot chocolate.

And oh man, I had no idea what I was in for. It's insanely good. Imagine a cup filled with molten milk chocolate, and then a slightly crusty top and you're close.

The Age's review said "closer to a dessert than a hot drink" which is erring on the side of caution, unless you can think of any other drinks that can only be consumed with a spoon.

The question is, does anyone in Perth make real Italian hot chocolate? If so, let's book in a hot chocolate trip when I'm back in town.

Update: Still no sign of Italian Hot Choc in Perth, but I did find and try out a recipe (June 16, 2005)

I know exactly what you are talking about. I travelled to Italy about 18 months ago and got addicted to their hot chocolate. I would love to find somewhere in Perth that makes it like that, but so far, no good. Let me know if you find somewhere that sells it! I would have thought that with all the Italians in Perth, somebody would sell this wonderful drink!

Personally, I think the best hot choc in Melbourne can be found at Plush Fish, a sushi/coffee place in Union House, Melbourne University. just melts in your mouth

how is the italian hot chocolate made what is actually in it?

That does look good, but we have those in Brisbane. But not every caffe has them, the only one I have found with it is the Schonell Cafe - i think it is called that- but it is in UQ (University of Queensland). It tastes like a real mud cake just hot and in a syrup form- almost the chocolate icing of a cake.

Found this recipe online, my family rated it "very authentic"....Enjoy!

Italian Hot Chocolate
I had this hot chocolate when I was in Italy and it was the thickest, smoothest hot chocolate drink I have had anywhere. This is highly recommended! Serves 6.
1/2 cup unsweetened powdered cocoa
1 cup sugar
7 tsp cornstarch
1/2 cup water
4 cups milk

Mix the cocoa and sugar together.

Dissolve the cornstarch in water and combine with the cocoa/sugar mixture in a medium sized saucepan. Stir this until it is a smooth paste.

Heat this mixture continually stirring with a whisk while pouring in milk.

Bring to a simmer and hold for 10 minutes — stirring often.

When the mix thickens to the consistency of unset pudding it is ready.

Pour into mugs and enjoy!

We (mom and daughter) are hoping you can bring Italian Hot Chocolate to the Washington, DC area, once you've accomplished your mission in Perth. We miss eating hot chocolate in Florence, Italy. Thanks for the recipe.

Hi, yes I have had my first Italian Hot Chocolate in Perth itself! It was the most decadent drinkable chocolate I've ever had and I can hardly drink an ordinary hot chocolate now without a wistful "man, I've had better" sigh. It's in O'Connor, in this restaurant along north lake road, near stock road. Can't remember the exact name but it's in the same complex as a MacDonald's and right next door to a hong kong noodle restaurant.... come to think of it.... time for another visit methinks...

It's called Amici Nostrini along 390-396 South Street heading towards Stock Rd. The asian restaurant next to it is called Welcome Noodle House. According to Whitepages they're called Terry's Amici but that's their old name. They open at 5pm onwards for dinner. Last time I tried them, they didn't have 'Italian Hot chocolate' on the menu per se, but when I ordered their ordinary hot chocolate I was pleasantly surprised with the Italian hot chocolate version.

If you go to Brisbane, there is one cafe called La Dolce Vita in Milton. Trust me, it is the best Italian Hot Chocolate I've ever tasted.
