Draw your own conclusions

Gothamist are drawing links between the sale price for Aeron chairs on Craigslist and the state of the tech economy, a topic that's not surprisingly close to my heart. If only in a they-were-never-that-cheap-in-Australia way.

Anyway, it's 2004 now. What self-respecting dot-com would be seen in an Aeron when there's new Mirras to be had?

Humour me

One upside of restaurant photography is that it's a socially acceptable reason to photograph chairs.

The Angel from Brixton

Skye EdwardsAround Christmas last year I finally caved and bought the Morcheeba live DVD Brixton to Beijing, not too sure how they'd sound live.

Of course they sound great (and the live scratching is pretty damn cool) but the one thing that always surprises me is Skye's accent. Skye Edwards, the woman behind the silky-smooth vocals, is from the UK. You knew this, I knew this -- it shouldn't come as a shock. But it does.

The same voice that makes sounds like this also sounds like this (two between-song banters spliced).

Her singing however, sounds amazing live.

A break in the storms

The storm clouds were getting depressing. So here's something spiky instead. Much friendlier.

More of the storm

Ok, so that one looks a little stormy.

I've hooked up some new Movable Type funkiness so I can post links in amongst my normal posts, pointing to other interesting stuff I find on the web in my daily travels. You can comment by clicking the number in brackets next to each link. Enjoy!

Winter settles in

Last weekend's storms were the beginning of winter proper -- the days are cold, the mornings colder, it's dark when I drive to work and the sun's almost setting when I drive home.

As usual, I headed out to the coast during the storm to grab some shots of the waves. I've got a few photos to cycle through over the next couple of days, and you'll have to take my word for it when I say I was almost blown over by the storm. Somehow in all the photos the dark clouds look like blue sky, making it seem like a sunny day in spring with a reasonable swell. Oh well.

New Heights

I've done a few weird and wonderful things for work before, but this morning's photo assignment takes the cake (for now at least). A client needed a photo of their office building, but they had a fairly ugly chain-link fence around the outside that ruined any photos from the street front.

Solution? A forklift with a cage and me inside, wearing a safety harness and 4.5 metres off the ground. It's all disturbingly fun really.

Why does that take the cake for now you ask? Next week I'm taking some photos at a restaurant... there may actually be cake involved in that job.

Flicker Zzzzzt *Pop*

The power transformer at the end of our street died last night (with a loud pop) so the street was in darkness from about 8. After using my mobile phone's backlight to track down a real torch, I dug around the house looking for some candles.

Of course the greatest upside of a blackout is the perfectly good excuse to light heaps of candles... I think I'm discovering my pyro tendencies later in life (I'm willing to accept some responsibility for littering Matt & April's backyard with at least a hundred tealights and a fair few bamboo flares for a 21st party).

It's also a great excuse to bring out the snowballs.

Trivia Monday

Last night's round of Trivial Pursuit (circa 1995 edition) proved one thing: we're definitely not in the target demographic for the Entertainment questions. After the game we ran through at least twenty questions and guessed maybe two or three.

1930s movies aside, this question from the game stumped everyone (it's Science & Nature):

What bird is the offspring of a cob and a pen?

A clean desk means...

As part of my motivation to get started yesterday morning, I decided it was time to clean my desk at work. Sick of losing pens and pencils, I've now got quite a stash hidden behind my monitors in a Dreamworld mug (with the name Mike on it -- such are the joys of raiding the kitchen cupboard at work).

So I figure it's Friday afternoon, most people at work are easily distracted, so tell me: what's on your desk?

Hello

  1. I'm doing a fair bit of overtime at work at the moment. It's good, it's bad. More good things will come in time. Like holidays -- I need one of those.
  2. I'm half-way through gutting my Movable Type so I can tie all my blogs together in one place. It's looking promising.
  3. My throat's a little itchy, which is as good an excuse as any to drink honey lemon tea. I don't drink coffee or tea (more by accident than reason) so this may be where I get hooked. This being my third cup today and all.
