And so it begins

Technically, that big CD-a-fortnight thing started two weeks ago. I just haven't quite got around to it yet. So this weekend I'm going looking for two CDs: one from an artist beginning with A, and one with B. I'll probably just head into JB and start flicking through the racks to see what grabs me, but I thought I'd throw the floor open for suggestions here as well.

Any takers?

Riiight. Thanks, K!

A few people have mentioned Ani DiFranco to me lately, so that's edging its way into pole position for A. Off the top of my head, B's drawn a complete blank. I could play a little loose with the alphabetical order and run with Butler Trio, John...

tut tut tut, there will be no playing it loose with the alphabet, i think i need to establish some rules for "David's CD a fortnight Challenge" (well burgo gets to put his name at the start of his show)

  1. you can go to any music store (i suggest JB's)
  2. you must select a cd from the albums section, not the new release albums (the idea being you build up your back catalogue of albums)
  3. upon selecting your album you begin flicking thru the cds from the alphabetical begining of the letter for that fortnight and purchase the first album that takes your fancy
  4. you don't continue flicking thru albums just in case there is a better album, this ruins the randomness of the challenge
  5. you can in reality ignore everything i've just said and do what ever you wanna do, but the above 4 rules is how i'm gonna play the game
  6. you can do the same for dvd's new release cd's, etc. etc

Just to be a pain in the rear, if you were going to buy a CD with an artist beginning with 'A' - does that mean the last name or the first name? OR do you select a CD where the shop has defined what letter the artist starts with?

To me Ani DiFranco seems like cheating - that's an arist beginning with 'D' right?

Alternatively, you can have the simplified-let's-play-nice-non-militant rules to Dave's CD a Fortnight Challenge:

  1. Go to music store
  2. Find CD for which you can justify to yourself that it is in some way associated with that fortnight's letter.
  3. Pay for CD (optional)
  4. Leave music store

For instance, I'm sure the Australian Idol CD could be justified - that Rise Up song is very catchy...

Ooooooooh, what an awesome idea!
Finally I have an excuse to buy a bunch of cd's I've always wanted.
Starting with : "Air - The Virgin Suicides"

Some B's that are worth a listen:

Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Beatles - Rubber Soul
Beck - Golden Age
Beautiful South - Welcome to the Beautiful South
Ben Folds Five - Rockin the Suburbs
Billy Bragg - Reachin to the Converted
British Sea Power - The Decline of British Sea Power
Jeff Buckley - Grace

Man, I forgot about British Sea Power! Not that I saw them on the shelf under 'b' in any of the genres I was looking through (and I think I covered pretty much everything) but that's beside the point. I've been meaning to get The Decline of... for a while now. I can see I'll end up with a fortnightly nominees list to work through as well.

Amon Tobin!! A more relaxing drum n bass album you will not find. Deeply layered percussion overlaid with jazzy brazilian overtones, mmm.

Your idea of 26's is a fine one, young Padowan, you might not be alone...

I can't believe it, my co-worker just bought a car for $33135. Isn't that crazy!
