my whopper junior has a question

With a name like Junior you can expect some minor psychological issues in your burger but as Mot pointed out, this is a fast food product with some serious gender issues (or at the very least, a tray-liner copywriter with some serious issues).

Here's an idea for the slightly smaller apetite -- the WHOPPER Junior. A WHOPPER, with a taste that's every bit as good as it's big brother -- just cut down to size. That means it's still made with juicy flame grilled beef and it's still put together with all the trimmings. Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup and mayonnaise, all in a sesame seed bun. The perfect stepping stone to the mother of all burgers -- The WHOPPER.

There's something about Hungry Jacks as a whole that is just very disturbing. Firstly there's those weird automatic doors - all they need is a hydraulic hissing sound and you could be mistaken for thinking you're on the set of a cheap sci-fi movie.

And then there's the music...

Posted by: Mot on November 19, 2003

The weird music is the entertaining by-product of teen staff and a jukebox filled with fairly random "rock" cds. I think the weirdness only got weirder when they redecorated all the stores in Baskin-Robbins-esque pink and blue.

Come to think of it, they did that around the same time Baskin got rid of their cheap pink and blue vinyl crap. Coincidence?

Posted by: Si on November 19, 2003

Hmm... I could imagine that as a kid sliding doors that make a weird sound and freaky music could be quite a traumatic experience. And the new colour decor... these kids could be traumatised for life! And I've always wondered how Hungry Jacks could keep their prices the same for such a long time - now I know.

... And now you all know, why i don't like Hungry Jacks!!!

Posted by: Dave on November 19, 2003

But Dave, the burgers are better at Hungry Jacks!

Posted by: Mot on November 20, 2003

Every time i have eaten at hungry jacks i have left feeling loating and slightly sick. They don't even grill their burgers, they microwave them.

Posted by: Tarsh on November 20, 2003

They do so grill their burgers...well at least the first time they cook them they do. It's illegal just to put the grill marks on them - Maccas got in trouble for doing that with their grilled chicken burger that was actually fried

Posted by: Mot on November 20, 2003

You seem slightly defensive of Hungry Jacks Mot...

Posted by: Jess on November 20, 2003

Mot always fights for the underdog.
Yes it's true that HJ's doesn't serve you cardboard burgers like Macca's but at least Macca's will make your special grill orders fresh from scratch as opposed to HJ's who just take a pre made burger remove the bits you don't want and re-heat it in the microwave

Posted by: Dave on November 20, 2003

Yeah I always thought their "Have it your way" slogan needed some kind of disclaimer about that...

Posted by: Si on November 20, 2003

isnt there more interesting things to discuss than HJ's?.....way to much time on your hands, I think!

Posted by: Katie on November 20, 2003

you suggest something katie and we'll all join in, but for now the ever raging HJ's vs Macca's debate will suffice

Posted by: Dave on November 20, 2003

thats crazy. burgers are microwaved to melt the cheese and cook the bacon. you wouldn't be able to cook a frozen meat pattie in a microwave, thats the stupidest thing ive ever heard.

Posted by: hjs manager on February 1, 2004

Hey... I work at HJ's... We do flame grill the meat patties and the grilled chicken patties in the broiler... Its like a massive BBQ sorta...
Then we microwave the normal meat patties (not grilled chickens etc)to make sure it is hot for the customer.

If you order a burger we make it from scratch... We don't use another burger and take off the stuff you dont want....

The bacon egg and cheese need to be heated in the microwave so the cheese melts and the others heat up... (and it tastes better! Trust me)

So hungry Jacks isn't that bad! Maccas isnt too bad either... I still eat there even though i work at HJ's...

Thanx guyz

All the beef is flame - grilled and microwaves are used to cook the cheese, bacon and egg. In most cases only the heel is put in the microwave, except for cheeseburgers, hamburgers etc.

I have been working at hungry jacks for quite a long time (3 years).

I will tell u how we make a whopper cos I'm bored.

We shove our raw meat patties into a broiler and the meats come out the other side of the broiler and we put these whopper meats into something called a phase 1 unit.

We get a bun and we put it through a toaster which toasts the bun obviously. Once the bun is toasted we get the cooked meat pattie out of the phase one unit and we place it on the heel of the bun and we shove it in the microwave for 8 seconds.

While the burger is in the microwave we get the crown of the bun and we use a spatula to wipe mayonaise on the crown of the bun then we put 11 grams of lettuce on the mayo and 2 sliced tomatoes on the lettuce.

By the time we have done that we take the heel of the bun out of the microwave and put four pickles evenly spread out on the meat pattie. Then we get tomato sauce and swirl it around on the bun in a circular motion. Once ketchup is on we put enough onion on the ketchup so that u atleast get a bite of the onion every time u take a bite out of ur burger.

Once that is done we place the crown of the burger and place it on the heel of the burger and then we wrap it and put it in the heat chute to be sold to customers.

This give u the perfect whopper.

Uh hi i'm a former employee of KFC, and strangely enough i'm looking for what type of mayonnaise u guys at HJ's use on ur burgers, i know it's not a normal question but i love the burgers, and just curious.
by that i mean the brand name, like KFC's Kraft Mircale Whip.

Posted by: Donny on November 22, 2004

Oh and what that awesome suce is made out of too ;D

Posted by: Donny on November 22, 2004

Hungry Jacks is BAD.... It tastes horrible...especially the sauce.

Posted by: HJ Hater on June 10, 2005

yeah i too want to know what type of mayonnaise u guys at hj's use, its so yummy!!!!

Posted by: chris on December 12, 2005

What the hell are HJ's fake fried egg made of?

Posted by: Nick on June 17, 2006

the fried eggs are actually made out of toasted kraft singles i used to wrok there

Posted by: poo on November 19, 2006

Hungry JAcks is a rotten place to work and they don't care about their employees. They are using cheaper products everyday, the eggs are actually baked then frozen and then thawed for usage.
The taste like cardboard.

Posted by: Terry Denton on December 30, 2006

It's pretty ludicrous to suggest that HJ would simply take items out of a premade burger when a spec burger is ordered. Many people take things out because of allergies; if you took tomato out of a premade burger it would leave seeds and juice, perhaps causing an allergic reaction in a customer who requested a burger minus tomato. And with cheese and sauces in burgers, taking them apart would be extremely messy.

HJs have always looked after me. Disgruntled ex-employees always have something to say. ^^

And to the crew member above, you forgot to mention that you must swirl the ketchup on the Whopper from the outside to the inside. You must remember that! :p

Posted by: Dren on January 13, 2007

pfft, the fried eggs aren't made from kraft singles...
and i'm pretty sure that the ketchup is Heinz.

Posted by: anonymous coward on January 14, 2007

hmmm... Kraft Singles? Isn't that cheese?
But either way, I find this quite amusing, I'm trying to get a job at HJ's coz' I need the experience and cash for 'stuff' ;)...
I'm not afraid of these silly stereotypes about HJ's, good on you, don't want a Whopper, don't enter the door... I love their Bacon though because I can't eat hard solid foods and I LOVE BACON. So their softer ones are more enjoyable for me :D

Posted by: Mac on January 26, 2007

I work at Hungry Jacks and have forgotten what you guys are all talking about... But yes... HOW ABOUT THESE NEW STORMS EH! Every secons order is for a Storm these days.

Posted by: Laura of the Jack on February 7, 2007

First time writing guys.. i have been working at hungry jacks for 3 years now and all the bullshit that these disgruntled employees and maccas workers are saying is ridiculous. At hungry jacks every burger that we make is made fresh and if a customer orders a spec than it is made with wehatever they want on it. At my store we dont even keeep a burger level bevause of the jack cowan mystery shop, where they come in and are solely looking at the burgers quality and the tidiness of the store. I like working at hungry jacks and what people are saying is a load of crap.

Posted by: hungry jacks king on February 14, 2007

woohoo! hj's rep.
people are really mean to suggest half the stuff they're saying. How do they know it's true??
I like working at hungry jacks. =]
and if the eggs weren't frozen and thawed, people would complain that their food is taking too long. nothing is ever good enough for you cynical arrogant people.
Yes, these storms are selling like crazy and those Summer Stunner meals.

Posted by: hj Melbourne Chik on February 5, 2008

hey i work at hungry jacks im a breakfast manager in a sydney store in Sydney.

our meat patties are cooked through the broiller ( like a huge BBQ) then kept in a thing we call phase 1.

the sauce is mayo on the whopper burgers.

its a good place to work but we are very strict on uniform and hair/nails etc.

its great for moving up the ladder and to kick off your career in retail.

iv been working here for 5 months, from previous experience from working at McDonalds for 5 months and yeah im now a breakfast manager.

i think it really does depend on what store you visit.

:)
