it doesn't rain...

The storms over the weekend were crazy. We lost power on Saturday night, and didn't get it back till late Sunday.

I decided this was as good a time as any to get back into taking photos -- more stormy beach shots are on their way. In related photo news, I did some work on the photo site on the weekend (the joy of laptops -- I'm oblivious to power cuts, at least for a couple of hours) and it's coming along. The next thing to do is fill it up with photos.

switch your phones, mate?

For a few months I've had a theory that the Australian telco industry is outsourcing it's sales calls to call centres in India. One too many Indian accents on a phone call from Optus was the first hint. And a slightly-too-formal phrasing that smacks of someone taught formal english as a second language.

They're onto me.

the bug

I think somewhere in the last few months I've swapped my photography bug for a travel one. I haven't taken interesting photos in ages. There's shots of people and places, but I haven't taken photos for photo's sake in weeks. Maybe a change of scenery would help.

In other news, some comments were made on Monday night about the mythical photo site I've been threatening to inflict on the web for some time now. The last few nights I've just gotten home and collapsed, so hopefully this weekend I'll get a chance to wrap something up. (The disturbing thing is the number of times I've mentioned the site in here)

I've got enough unfinished projects to fill a year.

i swear this is true

I just had a phone conversation with a guy at the Australian Tax Office called John Black. Which sounds like a pseudonym if ever there was one. Agent Black from the ATO.

He sounds like a nice guy though.

going up, going down (revisited)

It's interesting how much difference some colour changes the tone.

it's a monday

How do I know it's a Monday? Well, let's see:

  • My back hurts, stomach's churning and my throat's dry
  • I'm craving caffeine
  • I'm all lethargic from the sudden onset of Winter outside
  • Oh, and all my unemployed, tree-hugging left-wing-hippy student friends (you all know who you are!) have gone to Adventure World for the day. (pout)

Oh well. At least we're going out for a drink tonight.

friday afternoon mumbles

It's 5 on a Friday and I'm barely hanging in there.. It's been a long week for a bunch of reasons.

Media, spin doctors, politicians, protests, and protesters, are all starting to grate. No one is willing to discuss or debate, let alone consider the other side's case. Derek puts it more coherantly than I ever could.

rock is for newbies

I keep saying that one day I'll go back to the US for a while (having spent a year in LA as a kid) and I will do it. This story, via kottke's excellent sidebar, makes me want to practice up first. Some highlights:

"There's a science to it," he said, adding that he honed his skills settling childhood fights with siblings over who had to mow the lawn. "Everyone here's pretty much not as smart as I am."

"Whenever you see a tense muscle, they're going Rock. If they look relaxed, it's going to be Paper."

Still, neither contestant seemed fazed. Johnson, who had studied his opponent's moves intently, noted simply, "she's all Rock."

It's pretty safe to say that only in America could you win $1,000 playing Rock Scissors Paper. And even then, only in San Francisco.

pokerface

Learning to play Poker at Matt & April's, Sunday night (or in Ben's case, it's "learning" to play Poker...)

Photo: That's 'evil laugh' Ben in the middle there, and top left is Christobel doing her cool shuffling trick that looks really weird in photos.

live from the frontline

Worth checking out: Kevin Sites is a CNN reporter in Iraq covering the inevitable war on terror/saddam/pink fluffy slippers. He wrote a piece for CNN's own behind-the-scenes quasi-blog a few weeks ago and now he's gone one better.

He's blogging from the frontline on his own site (including audioblogs) about the day to day life of a journalist. It's going to be interesting to follow as the events unfold.

end of summer (pt 2)

Posts in the Lake Booragoon bed (they're normally underwater).

movies

Caught a few movies the last few weeks, and never got around to posting about it.

They're all good though: Aussie comedy Crackerjack and the classic 'The Party' both @ Sunset Cinema (the place to see comedies); I finally watched Empire Records; and a couple more that for some reason I can't remember right now (go Fridays!). I'll figure it out at 2am tonight I'm sure.

end of summer

Lake Booragoon, across the road from work, is normally a packed nesting ground for Ibises (Ibii?). Right now it's practically empty, and there were only about thirty birds there last night. I miss the flocks of white birds flying overhead in the afternoons.

turn your hard-earned into less

Kristie had a pocket full of small change, and didn't want to use it to pay at the petrol station. $5 worth of 20 cent coins to be exact.

I had $4 in the form of two shiny new $2 dollars coins.

We did a deal. In the tradition of shady money changers everywhere, I made a dollar profit. But then, I like to think of it as payment for design work previously undertaken (I should probably add that the dodgy exchange rate was actually Kristie's idea).

Anyone else got some small change?

irony isn't dead, it's just american

MacOS X offers an extensive list of available languages for use, including the following three: Australian English; English; and British English.

British English? Isn't there something incredibly, crazily wrong with that?

run down

Strange but true: that's in the heart of Perth's CBD (looking towards St George's Terrace, from the Westralia Centre bridge).

th-thump-thump-thump

Is it just me, or does someone else do a silent cheer when changing lanes on the freeway and not hitting any of the cats-eye lane markers?

more movable type fun

I'm just testing out Brad's Textile and John's SmartyPants plugins for Movable Type. They rock in many, many ways -- let me break that down:

  1. They makes all your entries look they way they should. For typography geeks like me, that's a dream come true
  2. One's called SmartyPants. SmartyPants! Hee hee!

Go get em.

with my back to the belltower

Corner of Barrack Street and Riverside Drive.

I was walking along and taking shots without really paying much attention (hence the AWOL 'C' from the sign) but I like it.

Perth has a very 2d skyline — it looks great from South Perth, but it's St George's Terrace and that's really all there is to it. As opposed to the amazing, well, huge-ness of Chicago, for example (one of my fave photos at the moment).

damned hackers

If you're running Movable Type (pre v2.6) and don't have the Sanitize plugin, grab a copy and install it. Better yet, update to the latest version (I will soon, promise).

My blog, from what I can tell, was hacked last week and probably used to run all sort of IRC-bot ugliness. I only noticed because of an odd comment (containing php code) and a weird file listed in my stats.

Does anyone get the impression hacking and spamming blogs is going to be the next big thing?
