i'd like to thank my mum, my dad...

Cube's own little baby, the Sunset Cinema website, is Site of the Week at Macromedia Asia Pacific.

If this keeps up, I might snare at least an Emmy for my role as the zombie.

take, not borrow

I love the way the concept of borrowing has really stuck over here. You borrow someone's book. A friend's CD. And this morning, someone at work was going to borrow somebody's Weetbix. I don't want to know how the implied returning stage of this transaction is going to work.

Incidentally, it's funny how the music industry gets their knickers in a twist over people sharing music, screaming "the sky is falling" like it's going to kill the industry. But everybody borrows books. And hey, whaddya know. They're still making books.

fizz

Did anyone else experience the mystical healing powers of flat lemonade as a child? I remember when I was young and feeling under the weather, the thing to do was drink de-fizzed lemonade.

Now in a world of big plastic bottles, we were a can-happy family, so flat lemonade was pretty hard to come by. So I've now got vivid memories of a childhood spent pouring perfectly good fresh-from-the-can lemonade from one glass to another to get rid of the bubbles.

As you do.

Was that gem something my parents made up, or is that a common way to get some sugar into a sick kid? And don't get me started on Lucozade, either. That used to be the standard post-doctor pharmacy booty for me, along with little single-serve packets of jelly beans. Mmmm.

A pic from a trip to Retro Betty's the other night. I'm thinking of submitting it for the mirror project, even though I'm a pretty unrecognisable blob.

uhm

In an entirely work-related visit, I noticed something very odd on the splash page of the really, really bad divastarz website (the z means they're cooler than you). Check out exhibit a and tell me if (a) that pose is appropriate for a kids site; and (b) if her fly is undone?

No, really. Work related. Kristie can back me up here. I'd show you guys, but we signed some heavy NDA's so I'd probably lose my first-through-third borns.

I'm going through a bit of a lime green/blue thing at the moment. If this design suddenly goes all colourful, you'll know why. That is all.

how thoughtful

In big letters on a pamphlet from a bank this week:

Let Citibank Loan Protection Pay Off Your Loan Up To $200,000
In the event of your untimely death or disability!

The final exclamation mark is the icing, like you should be excited that you (or possibly just your legs) are no longer with us. Woo! Where do I sign?

We also decided as well as death and disability, they should offer cover in case a catepillar dies on your upper lip. Just a thought.

webfeet design

webfeet.gifA big shout out to the genii (plural of genius?) at Microsoft, more specifically the ones working on the Outlook Express dictionary. Lovely work, guys.

As well as "website," it also takes a machete to the name Jeremy, suggesting Jerry, Jerky, Gouramy and Gamy.

At least I now have Microsoft's endorsement to call our MD Jerky, so I guess there's one thing to be thankful for.

beo

This, my friend, is my trusty stereo. It's B&O (the start of my well-documented and unhealthy obsession) and it's close to 28 years old, bought by my parents while they were living in Denmark.

Which means this little baby was pumping out music before I was around. And it still sounds amazing.. as part of my stringent relaxation regime, I moved it back into my room from the lounge, so now I can sit in bed and listen to music way too loud.

My only dilemma is what to do with it when I get a new stereo from the Danish Gods of Design. I know if I can't find somewhere at my place for it to live, my Dad's already offered to take it in again.

but no axe

Tuesday night I discovered the secret to breaking into Matt and April's flat (don't look at me like that — they locked themselves out!).

In no particular order, it involves: a mobile phone; torch; a vintage camera; some orange juice; and a naked biker dude.

bzzzz

Fridays are wonderful days.

Not only because it's the start of the weekend, but because Friday morning means Coco Pops. Every other weekday I have Corn Flakes for breakfast, but Fridays are all sugary and chocolate. I figure the best way to start a Friday is with a major sugar buzz.

I think it traces back to my childhood, when my well-intentioned parents had my sister and I on a morning regime of Special K, Corn Flakes, Nutrigrain and other reasonably tasty but not particularly sugary cereals. We got our pick of the contraband during the school holidays, when we went wild. I guess that's why it was only during the holidays — we'd dose up on sugar and then get kicked out to play with the other kids on the street.

Being gainfully employed, holidays are few and far between, so I needed some other excuse to get sugared up. And Friday is as good a reason as any.

desk widgets

Most office desks (and home computer desks, from memory) have little cutout holes with plastic covers on the top, usually hidden away in a back corner, which you're meant to feed all your cables through. Now in my short working history, I've never actually used them for cables. In fact the little plastic disc that covers the hole is currently my fidget of choice. Has anyone ever actually used those things?

nueve reinas

I made a crazy last-minute decision to see Nine Queens at the Luna last night. Excellent film, a lot of fun, and some great characters — recommended. Ditto the always funky Luna Leederville cinemas.

holding steady

Some days you wonder why you bother.

In better news, The Panel are releasing a third 'live on The Panel' cd this week, and if it's anything like the last one, it's well worth the asking price. This time they've even squeezed in 23 songs, pretty impressive with all these anorexic compilations out at the moment. I'm thinking of bumping it up a few spots on my cds-I-need-to-buy list and getting some music (and retail) therapy this weekend.

I also need to pick up a particular cd so I can be all prepped up for the Perth Sunset Live gig. The press ads go out tomorrow, so I'll be able to tell you more then. But feel free to post your guesses.

uphill

Some days you just spend the whole day fighting an uphill battle against technology. Today it was Powerpoint's turn to be the ogre.

Grrrr.

On the plus-side, I'm looking forward to switching all our Macs at the Cube to OS X. There's so many funky little toys for X that I'm feeling left out puttering along in 9. Oh, and the added stability would be a bonus. At the moment Outlook's way of alerting me to new email is to hang my machine. It's more attention-grabbing than the default beep, but I'm not sure I prefer it.

mini golf

Between my house and the big shopping centre about a minute away is a very traffic-calmed road with a bunch of chicanes. Driving along on Saturday I stumbled across a bunch of teens playing some sort of game in the right lane that seemed to involve a small stuffed toy tiger and a golf club.

I was this close to pulling over and watching for a while.

how you doin?

Lazy single people take note: Vanilla Coke is something of a conversation starter. Every time I buy a bottle I end up chatting to the girl behind the counter. And if you're feeling cheesy, there's a lot of dodgy lines about being sweet.

apologies to waynes world

Last night after work, three of us sat around for a while laughing at old stories from the past two years at work. It was like one of the lazy episodes of Family Ties when all the script writers were hung over — they end up spending the whole episode in flashbacks, led by Michael J Fox going "do you remember when Mallory..."

It's been a fun couple of years. Here's to more fun time ahead.

i feel dirty

Microsoft are about to launch new ads for the mac version of Office, touting how well it works with the Windows version. From news.com:

Microsoft is planning on Thursday to announce a new advertising campaign touting the Macintosh version of its Office suite... One ad features a Mac and a PC playing chess by the pool, while another shows a Mac and PC eating Chinese take-out while watching a late-night movie.

"Macs and PCs have never been so compatible," read the ads' headlines.

make love, not raymond (pt 2)

Memo to the people who ended up here after doing a google search for download everybody loves raymond episodes — the first step is admitting that you have a problem. I believe with proper care and treatment, you can stop loving, heck, even liking Raymond, and resume a normal life in society.

happens to me all the time

For those who aren't familiar with its fields-o-plenty, Getty Images is the owner of an obscene amount of stock photography. There's everything you could ever want on there, at least in terms of finding pics for client work.

But every once in a while, something bizarre shows up amongst your search results. Like, for example, this gem.

Exactly how would you explain that one to the model beforehand?

Discovered deep in the bowels of the fridge at work, this archeological gem is enough to put me off lunch for the next couple of weeks. Roll over for a, ahem, look at the back of the jar.

Ewwww.

curiosity killed the cat

First impressions? It's quite nice actually. Kinda like a spider, but not.

At least it's better than the surprisingly-bad Lemon Coke. What were they thinking?

bunch of thoughts

I'm now back living 'at home' in my shared villa (that's the actual term used to describe the building... sounds all Tuscan and seaside, I can assure you it's neither). I spent the first night back lying on my bed and listening to music at volumes you can't even think about in a block of flats.

Caught The Bourne Identity at the movies last week. Altogether not a bad film, but it's got nothing on the book. Worth seeing just to smile at (a) how many times Franke Potente swears in German, and (b) how good it sounds when she does.

If you're in the US, check out Paul Dempsey's tour to support the release of Something for Kate's CD release in the states. He's solo and acoustic, which means it should be an amazing show.

sealed

There's a lot going on in my life that I can't talk about here, most fit under the heading of "Things I've learnt about running a business."

It's things that I'd like to write about here, but the Si that comes across in diversionary daily, and the Si that runs a business are pretty different, and pretty distinct. I don't like the thought of people doing a search for the company name and ending up here, at least without some introduction.

So a lot goes unsaid. Know me well and you can probably read between the lines and work out what's going on. Otherwise, assume this is the mantra: it has its ups and downs. Some days running your own business is an amazing high, it's a complete buzz. Other days, well, they're not so great.

on legal advice

Last night in a phone call to Matt, I made a comment along the lines of "that's like snorting sherbert..."

At no stage in my twenty-two years have I willingly inhaled sherbert. Just to clear that up. I'm not sure I'd want to.

On the other hand, if you've ever inhaled the stuff, feel free to share your sugary experience with everyone in the comments.

arrrr, a fisherman's story

The alleged "Paramount Fisherman's story" as found on the back of a tuna can label:

In '47 I left high school to go fishin' full time. My boat was the Rio Kid. She was a beauty, a real good boat. Owe her my life, a few times over. And she was lucky, caught a lot of fish.

Us fishermen are quite a superstitious bunch. Like if someone opens a can upside down while we're at sea we toss it overboard. The last thing we want is the old lady gettin' any ideas about capsizing. A boat that's turned over gets a reputation. Can be hard to find new crews to work on her.

But a boat known for catching a lot of fish, well, crews are no problem. You get the best fishermen on board, the ones who know how to catch the best fish. Which is lucky for you, because all the boats at Paramount are lucky boats.

— Normie 'Rio Kid' Gotch

Brings a tear to me eye, arrrr.
