Art on the Riviera

Few tourist destinations have elicited such vivid artistic attention as the Côte d’Azur. Since the late 19th century, artists have flocked to the region, soaking up its sunlight and basking in its landscapes.

Monet first visited Antibes in 1884, Renoir moved to Cagnes–sur–Mer in 1895 and Signac bought a house in the fishing village of St-Tropez in 1892. Matisse, who would later settle in Nice, first visited the Riviera in 1904, and together with Braque, Derain, Vlaminck, van Dongen and other so-called Fauves (wild beasts), transformed the use of colour in modern art.
